The Anatomy Lesson
THE RENAISSANCE SERIES
CREATIVE / ART DIRECTION / PHOTOGRAPHY
Drawing from the visual language of Renaissance and Dutch Master paintings, this body of work reimagines classical composition through a contemporary, cinematic lens while introducing an underlying, carefully measured sense of humor in its reinterpretation of the originals. Conceived as a passion project and developed independently alongside close collaborators, the series underwent months of meticulous pre production. Casting was central to the process, supported by carefully considered wardrobe, styling, and prop selection, all designed to translate the emotional weight and compositional rigor of the masterworks into a modern, narrative-driven context.
The resulting images balance theatrical lighting, restrained color palettes, and precisely staged tableaux evoking the gravity, drama, and intimacy of the original paintings, while subtle visual wit and character based humor gently disrupt expectations. This tonal tension allows the work to feel both reverent and contemporary, honoring art history while quietly recontextualizing it.
The series received significant recognition, including the American Photographic Artists Conceptual Photography Award, First Place at the International Color Awards, and a Silver Award from One Eyeland for Conceptual Photography.
Following its initial release, the work gained widespread global attention after being featured in the Huffington Post’s Art section, triggering rapid viral circulation. Within two weeks, the series amassed over 900,000 views and more than 375,000 social shares, and was subsequently featured across major international publications and art platforms including Der Spiegel (Germany), The Daily Mail (UK), Colossal, My Modern Met, PetaPixel, Artnet, Reddit, The Telegraph, Mashable, and CNET, among others.
In the wake of this exposure, the series was acquired and sold as fine art through prominent galleries and art fairs worldwide, including Art Wynwood Miami (with Vogelsang Gallery), a solo exhibition at Urbane Art Gallery (UK), Affordable Art Fair London and Edinburgh (with Urbane Art Gallery), and Vogelsang Gallery in Brussels.
In 2020, the body of work received further institutional recognition when it was curated by James Putnam for the Iconic Works exhibition, presented at national art museums in Stockholm and Finland, solidifying its place within a broader contemporary art discourse.
